Dare Dukes and Candle Guy

Last night on Blockhead Rod's Friday Night Features we played Prettiest Transmitter of All by Dare Dukes and share with you the artisan candleguy821.

Before we can play any music let's set the mood.

Candles by Donald. I make and sell scented and non-scented palm and paraffin wax candles. I make only a few candles each day in my outdoor studio. I think it has been 4 years of selling candles and about 5 years of making them. Do not be shy, please contact me with your candle questions. I like to communicate with people to talk candles.

My pick for listening to Prettiest Transmitter of All by Dare Dukes is:

DRAGONS BLOOD

Candles by Donald is offering a 3 inch diameter X 4 1/2 inches tall palm wax pillar candle. The candle is scented with the very popular fragrance “Dragon’s Blood”. You may have smelled this fragrance while shopping at a new age store or herb shop. This scent described as an oriental blend of orange, rose, and carnation nestled on a warm dry down of patchouli is exotic as well as mystical. The candle has good throw both hot and cold adding a presence to the room. The scarlet color is brilliant, adding to the beautiful feather pattern exhibited by this blend of palm wax. It is a one pound great smelling candle. The photos show a stunning scarlet candle, commanding as a dragon should be. I can assure you all that no dragon’s were slain or harmed in any way during the making of this candle.

Now on to the Music.

Last night we featured Prettiest Transmitter of All by Dare Dukes. The songs that make up Dare Dukes´ new album, Prettiest Transmitter of All, are a striking combination of incisive intelligence and sweet, doleful hooks. Looking past the shiny surfaces of American life, the Savannah, GA based singer-songwriter chronicles the everyday world, mining the margins for the eccentric characters and bizarre events that are the heart of his music.

Born and raised in the
exurb of San Jose, California, Dare grew up as the state blossomed into what he calls, "exit-ramp culture" a maze of smoked-glass franchises and cookie cutter subdivisions that took root along the vast network of interstate freeways. "Everyone knows the cliches about suburbia: It's a stark, sanitized landscape, pretty much soulless," Dare explains. "No one needs to remind us of that. I'm more interested in the poetry I see there the weirdness, the anomalies, the resistance. Even in this unlikely grid you can find courageous people and precious things."

From Sam's Cathedral to The Equipment is fine Dare created a CD that will both inspire and entertain you.

Buy the CD

Thanks for tuning in and we'll see ya next Friday when we will feature a new Cd and Artisan.

I've Been Plurking

Yes I have developed a new uhm....... addiction. Plurk.

What is Plurk?

Noun. plurk (plüer-kh) - A really snazzy site that allows you to showcase the events that make up your life in deliciously digestible chunks. Low in fat, 5 calories per serving, yet chock full of goodness.

Verb. plurk (plüer-kh) - To chronicle the events of your always on, action-packed, storybook, semi-charmed kinda life.

Example use: 'Gee golly, my children are plurking all day long, what's a mother to do?'

Why join them, of course! Yes, Plurk is for everyone. We've taken the time, the complexity, and the deep introspection required out of blogging.

This isn't Billy Q. Poindexter's blog, no, no. Instead, Plurk is an easy way to chronicle and share the things you do, the way you feel, and all the other things in between that make up your life, with the people close to you. It's instant gratification, instant self-indulgence, instant celebrity, instantly YOU. Share your life stream, live your life….Plurk!

That is how they describe it. Now, let me share my experience.

ClosetCreature from birdysknits coaxed me over to Plurk. So this past Sunday I waded out into Plurk. Soon I found myself in a massive riptide and was way out. Being a smart swimmer I did not fight it.

Plurk is a social media like no other I've ran across. It is setup as an easy to follow timeline where you can keep track of the conversations. It is also great for multi tasking. You can set your Plurks up to feed into your other social networks like Friendster, Facebook, Twitter, and Multiply. So you can multi task with one Plurk. It is great for meeting new people, fun, and promotions.

I did the live shows yesterday while plurking, sing a longs, song requests, and of course a Plurk Fast Fingers. I will keep Plurk as part of BHR for as long as I can keep my sanity.

So if your are ready for a lot of fun join me on Plurk............I hope to see you there.

Blockhead Rod's Friday Night Features.....Kewl Magnets and Double Standards

First thing first. I have to admit that I am having a riot doing this show. I am getting to talk to some great artisans and musicians. This past Friday we featured Ms Picard from picardcreative and the Double Standards CD from Patti Rothberg.

"Why buy a greeting card that will just get tossed in a drawer and forgotten? buy your friends a piece of art that they will use and treasure. Great for all occasions. birthdays, congratulations, cheer up, divorce, or just because. Everybody loves and needs magnets. mine are silly, sarcastic, artistic and in some cases- downright rude."

I feel in love with her magnets. I had seen her shop but it was a thread that our ol' buddy ShineyHiney posted that got me to really look. (and yes the invoice is on the way for the plug) Ms Picard joined me on air and we had a lot of fun together. She has a great sense of humor and some really cool magnets. She combines photo's with sayings and they all had me laughing. It was hard to pick out a favorite but here I go:

Product Description: think about it- isnt it true? uh huh!

Magnets are always buy 5 get one FREE. Just list the desired free magnet in the paypal notes to seller section when you check out and I will add it to your order for Free- no additional shipping or nothin!

These are so much fun- artistic and practical at the same time. These are all handmade- (well, except the lids)
I love doing collage work and each one will have its own specialness.

Be sure to check out my packaging- I Send each magnet packaged in an organza bag with my card attached. (colors of bag may vary)

There is nothing better than the gift of laughter and handmade art.

I make these using recycled tin can lids that I have rescued- I also beg all my friends to save their lids for me. They are coated with glaze to protect the image- and keep it wonderful for years and years.

I have a very absurd sense of humor and love to make people laugh. I enjoy making these magnets.

Picardcreative will also do custom orders and has a buy 5 get 1 free deal. Works out great for us with 6 kids and the grandparents. Visit Ms Picard today.

Now some great music.
Double Standards by Patti Rothberg. Patti Rothberg is a critically acclaimed singer/songwriter whose songs have the power to take over a stadium without losing their lyrical intimacy. On Double Standards, Rothberg's razor sharp wit and stark honesty trade barbs in the studio where she thrives in her creative freedom and at last releases an album that reflects her talent as a whole. While the album's lyrics delve into concepts that are more than meets the eye, musically it's split down the middle between hard rock that hang out with the guys and heartfelt acoustic songs. Rothberg likes to think that Double Standards been released in the age of vinyl, the rockin' songs might all go one side and the acoustic on the other. An electric guitar-wielding rock chick with a novelist's introspection, Patti is the rare artist who can work both sides of the musical spectrum.

Visit Patti on her website to learn more about her, her music, and her artwork....yep I said artwork. Patti Rothberg.com

Friday Night Features..Infinite Photography with Spirit And Skin

On Friday 04/10 we did a great double feature. Our artisans was Adam from infivision on Artfire and the CD was Spirit and Skin by Judd Starr.

Adam joined us live on the air and we talked about his photography and who he was. The conclusion I came to was that Adam in the ultimate guy. Not only is he a talented photographer, he can write code, restore old cars, weld, cross stitch, rides a Harley, and so much more. Adam is also the creator of byhand.me. (Join us Monday night at 9pm et for all the info on this great site)

My pick from his shop was "Give me a Hand".

Product Description:
One of the most popular up and coming events around, poker has long been a staple for the gentlemen gambler. Played around the country in garages and basements, in smoke filled rooms, and out on the deck on a nice summer night with beer and cigars. Bring this image into your game room and have your own poker night with the boys, or the girls.
8"x10" print.

Each print will be signed and dated on the back by the artist. A custom message can be included if this is a gift for a special person in your life.

His scope of photography ranges from macro to landscapes. It is well worth you time to browse his shop and purchase some of these wonderful prints. Most are limited editions so do not delay.

The other half of my feature was on the latest CD by Judd Starr Spirit and Skin.

Recipe: 1 Part Retro Rock, 1 Part The Bravery, 1/2 Scoop of Duran Duran. Mix, Bake and Let It Rise. That is the description of this CD.

As Judd states, “With Spirit and Skin, I whole-heartedly focused on what I wanted to say both musically and lyrically. I didn’t want to write about boy kisses girl, boy loses girl, boy sad. That’s been done enough.” And indeed, the album displays an uncommonly smart and incisive perspective on modern American life. “What If I’m Fine” is an indictment of a culture where everyone is taught that there is “something wrong with them,” and the answer to their problem is only a pill (or a product) away. “We haven’t evolved much from the snake oil salesmen who sold magic in a bottle from a wooden wagon,” says Judd with a knowing laugh.

“Borrow You,” a song that Judd says was the most cathartic for him to write, deals with the absurdity of consumer culture in Los Angeles and its obsession with material objects. Judd’s lyrics are sharp and penetrating, but with an added layer of compassion. “I’d always wanted to write a song like that, but it was difficult not to be preachy,” he recalls. And the title track, “Spirit and Skin,” conjures the battle between the soul and the flesh and the occasional human desire to escape, not from a place but from our own selves.

Musically, the album is pop in the best way...well crafted, catchy and memorable, a reminder that music doesn’t have to sound unmelodious in order to be “real.” Judd explains, “The most difficult task in music is to write a concise, meaningful yet relatable song that compels a person to sing it and want to keep listening to it. If that’s ‘pop’ music, that’s what I want to be, whether it’s considered cool or not.”

Grab your copy of Judd Starr's Spirit and Skin here.

Thanks to all the listeners that joined me. This upcoming Friday Night Feature is going to blow your socks off too. Be sure to join me Fridays and 8 p.m. et for Blockhead Rod's Friday Night Features.

From The Blockhead Rod Show to Blockhead Radio

As I sit here early this morning with a long set of Hot Buttered Rum playing, I am almost overwhelmed with what has happened.

First a little history.

I think back to the humble beginnings of 'The Blockhead Rod Show'. Yep that was the name of it way back when. A friend of mine (Gena from the Creative Animal Relief show Mondays 7pm et on BHR, yep we got her and Tammy on BHR now.) knew I was a pro blogger and told me about this Internet radio platform. I tuned into one of her shows, called in, and I was hooked. The next Monday I did my first show. I was so nervous I dropped the phone during the show. You can ask Sew Happy Designs about that, she was there. I settled down after that and really enjoyed doing the shows promoting artisans and trying to help them out in any way I could. It was a good show, but kind of Steinish (yes that is an official BHR term) I knew something was missing. Then one Monday night some flaky chick called in and crashed my show......did it again the following Monday. I figured for the sake of the show I would just put her on as a co host
......welcome Witchy.

From there we grew to 14 live shows a week and maxed out what we could do on that platform. We talked about it and decided we would launch our own station. Hey I can do that no problem. ROFLOL it was fun. After looking around I went the independent route. Really wish somebody would write a book on it.......I just wanna know how we did it. Blockhead Radio is now a live streaming 24/7 Internet radio station exposing artisans to the world with a blend of music from the top indie musicians.

Where are we at now.

16 live show from artisan shows to in the garden and growing. We have several shows in the works and still looking to add more. All the shows center around from being and artisan, to family, to life. It is still a kid friendly station. Hey, we might have slipped but we can control ourselves.

Last week we officially partnered up with Artfire.com. This wasn't a spur of the minute decision and not one we did for money. I am so impressed with what John and Tony had put together for the artisan. They really do put the artisan first. Artfire has a new site launching here soon, http://handmadenews.org and there is a button that launches the player. That was awesome. Now we can reach more artisans and more buyers.

Witchy, Huck, and I have been hanging out at a new site over the past couple weeks. http://byhand.me Yes mama, I know you told me about it, but I was still in the process of figuring out which wire went where. Thankfully an artisan in the Artfire chatterbox told Witchy about it and we were hooked. Infivison and Soapdeli have put together an outstanding site for artisans. So Blockheads being Blockheads we went on air telling everybody about this site. That's what we do. Over the weekend they added a really cool banner link to Blockhead Radio on their site. Thanks to both of you.

I got up this morning to 3 emails that really brought it home for me. Sometimes I get so busy coding, getting shows together, and promoting I forget about the impact we are having.

The first was from Soapdeli.

"Take a look at http://byhand.me and tell me if you see anything different." I went to the site with my first cup of coffee in hand. Right there on top is a button (really cool looking I have to add) to launch the player. That almost put me on the floor. I had to ask myself.......'are we really that good?'

The second email was from an artisan.

"I am a new listener to Blockhead Radio and haven't ventured into chat yet. I haven't made a sale yet but have now got inspiration again." All I could say was come on into chat, Witchy is the only one who bites and I've got all her shot records and they are up to date.

The third one was from a listener and I get quite a few that go along the same lines every week.

"Dude your station rocks. I heard about it in a forum and tuned in one morning. You and witchy had me laughing so hard that I had tears rolling out of my eyes. I love the music. I can't believe these bands are indie. I never knew about this handmade thing and started checking out some of the links. It is so cool. Thanks for the music and rock on." Dude, got my bic out held high during most of the songs too. Glad you love the music....we got more indie musicians getting ready to join us.

So are we really that good? I don't know, but we sure have fun doing it. We put something together here that hasn't been done before. Every day I work at improving the stations quality and making it easier for people to listen in. As Mike Burnes said, "You've started a revolution in the radio and music industry". Oops. The majority of internet stations work under a commercial site. Not us. Hey we may have hiccups every now and then but that's half the fun...not really,
it drives me nuts.

The best thing to have come from this venture are all the new friends I have made.

I want to thank our listeners, stalkers, and friends. We do this for you. (and beer money) Really, it has been through your support that BHR has become what it is.

Have a Great Day and ROCK ON DUDE,
Blockhead

Sabrina Shaheen

SABRINA SHAHEEN: Love Is...Sabrina’s CD, Love Is... is a vocally driven pop CD with various musical genres coming together to create one sound that is uniquely hers. With an imaginative contrast of vocal styling and dynamic arrangements, Sabrina is destined to shed new light on contemporary music.

For years, Sabrina Shaheen has touched listeners with the sound of her voice and her dedication to uplifting people with her music. Whether singing in the theater, the symphony, in film or in concert, Sabrina is one of those rare performers whose singing conveys both passionate beauty and depth. Her new album, Love Is... is a powerful expression of her musical vision, one that has been a lifetime in the making.

Born and raised in Michigan, Sabrina has been immersed in music and the arts for as long as she can remember. Starting on her family’s piano at the age of four, at seven, she began formal piano lessons. At the same time, she was studying ballet (from the age of three through college) and would eventually become a member of the Tri-City Ballet Company while in high school. (Sabrina has studied a variety of dance, including ballet, tap, flamenco, modern and jazz.)

Throughout the challenges of her life, music has been, in Sabrina’s words, “a true, loyal friend – the thing that’s never let me down.” Loving various genres of music – hard rock, jazz, pop, classical and dance, Sabrina channeled her love into an intensive program of music study, all with the goal of becoming a performer.

A performer is what Sabrina has become, playing in over ten musical, dance and theatrical roles for the University of Michigan and regional theaters with lead roles in Kismet, A Chorus Line and Peter Pan, among others. She has sung at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Hall in Detroit and has performed live at Detroit’s legendary Cobo Hall. She’s been a mainstay in the Detroit music circuit, keeping up a relentless schedule of performing her originals and standards at various clubs, restaurants and parties. Her versatility has also earned her voice-over work and even won her the lead role in the independent film “Rage Of Justice.” And in perhaps her most unusual gig, she sang at a private party for Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Amidst her dizzying schedule and accomplishments, over the last few years, Sabrina worked on what she calls, “my labor of love,” her new album, Love Is… Produced by Brian Drago and Sabrina herself, the album is a departure from Sabrina’s history of singing jazz. Instead, Love Is… emphasizes Sabrina’s love of dance and ethereal pop, simultaneously recalling Madonna and Enya. Sabrina says, “The more self-confident I’ve become, the more I wanted to get into various pop styles; some with a dance beat, some with a middle eastern sound. To me, it all blends together into my own style.”

Standout tracks include the sultry opening song, “Show Me,” and the album’s title track, “Love Is…” an expression of Sabrina’s vision of what love makes possible for humanity. She expands, “I love the song because it captures what I believe humans can strive for – a kinder level of living for humanity.” “Ecstasy” oozes with sensuality, as Sabrina’s voice weaves a tale of hypnotic seduction that’s utterly irresistible. And the album’s first single, “In My Life,” is the album’s statement of purpose – to follow a dream no matter who or what is in the way.

After years of working to be the best singer, writer and performer she can be, and in a career filled with impacting all whom she encounters, Sabrina Shaheen has reached a peak with Love Is… Her intention to reach people through her music remains as unshakable as ever. She declares, “I want my music to be heard by people all over the world – I’ve been through so much, and I want to share it with everyone.” Given Sabrina’s dedication to her craft and her relentless pursuit of her dream, it seems almost inevitable that her wish will come true.

You can find Sabrina online at sabrinashaheen.com or purchase her CD here.

Help Wanted.......

Have you ever thought about hosting a show? Do you have an idea that you would like to share? Blockhead Radio is expanding our talk shows and we are looking for hosts for new shows.

BHR is a family friendly live streaming Internet radio station. Our shows are centered around independent artisans and family life. We currently have 9 live broadcasts a week and are looking to expand to 35 shows. Some of the show themes we are looking at are:

Decorating on a Budget
Gardening
Tech Review
Fishing Show
Family/Kid
Movie/DVD Review

If you have a working knowledge or interest in the above topics please let us know. We are also looking for new concept shows. We just ask that they would be of interest to artisans/music listeners/sahm/wahm. Please on political, religious, or negative shows.

What is in it for you? Recognition. Fans. Stalkers. Each host will have a page on www.blockheadradiolive.com with a bio and links. This is a great way to build your customer base or drive traffic to your site. On rebroadcast shows there will be a click through banner on the player to your site. And it's a lot of fun.

What is required from you. Commitment. You would be required to do a weekly or biweekly broadcast. We are flexible on times but it would need to be Monday through Friday. We have limited prime time slots available and they will be issued as available. Day shows are great too. You would need to setup a Skype account (free) and have a headset (about $18.00). You would also need to be able to do a post show article for our blog. That and content.

Hosting a radio show is a riot. You will meet a lot of new friends and with the interactivity with the chat room keeps the shows going.

If you are interested in hosting a show please contact rod@blockheadradio.com.

~~Blockhead Radio, Exposing Artisans to the World

What is Blockhead Radio?

What is Blockhead Radio? That seems to be the million dollar question of late. The best way to figure out who we are is to go back to the beginning. I started out last year with a blog called 'Etsy Spotlight On'. It was an homage to my wife and her friends to help bring some traffic to their Etsy shops. Monday through Friday I would feature a new seller from Etsy. Let me just say, it snowballed from there. Etsy Spotlight On led to several blogs that featured artisans.

One day last September I was asked by a friend to be a guest on her BTR radio show. I was hooked and the following week I started 'The Blockhead Rod Show'. The shows were just an extension of what I was doing with the blogs. Exposing artisan's and sharing tips and tricks on how to market, set up blogs, etc. I really enjoyed doing the shows, but something was missing..........enter indie music, Witchy, and the fun.

We expanded on our shows and built a following on BTR. We hit the limit with the number of shows and time that we were able to broadcast. The next step was to start our own station. Here's BHR.

Now I am going to be honest here. I didn't have a clue. I spent many hours researching Internet radio and all the options that were out there. What we created was out of the "norm", meaning we are a stand alone station. We do not belong to any radio groups/business'. I patch worked together a encoder, phone system, and chat into one package. Still not sure how, but hey it works......now..................most of the time.

Somethings have been changing lately and we are trying to 'find' ourselves. One thing that had set us apart from most shows on the 'net was that we were kid friendly. We seemed to have slipped out of that over the past couple weeks, but we are back to being PG-13 on all of our shows. We started moving away from the artisan shows and more on just fun and music. I don't know what to say. It is a business now and we have been trying to find what works. I have come to the conclusion that what works is what we started as. A Talk Radio station that promotes indie artisans, including the musicians, and life in general. We are going back to that. Here is a current list of shows on BHR:

The Morning BrewHaHa........hey still gotta have coffee and fun in the morning.

Artisan for Artisan. Tips, tricks, and ways to improve your online presence. We are including 'Ask Huck' with this show.

Sneak Attack Live. Joining up with the handmade movement has been a lot of fun. Chain does a great job putting together sneak attacks week after week.

Thursday Spotlight On. Ruthie does a great job of exposing a new artisan every week.

Artisan Team and Group. Lily spotlights a new group every Saturday. This is a great way to find out about teams/groups that you might benefit from joining.

These shows are live every week. We are looking to add to our talk show schedule. In pre-production right now we have 'Tough Times', a show to help you balance the budget and save money. Cooking with Mr Moo...........that's right a cooking show. Book of the Month show. I have several more ideas for shows and if you are interested in being a host, please contact me.

Gardening/Plant Show
Kids and Teens Show
New Discovery Show
Art Instruction Show
Fishing Show
Tech Show

From the list I guess you can see what type of station we are becoming. A talk radio station playing great music while exposing indie artisan and talking about living and having fun in your everyday life. Yep that sums it up and we are going to do it in a way that kids can listen in.

These are just the tip of the iceberg. There are a lot of ideals out there and we are looking to add a full schedule. The majority of the shows are going to be prerecorded and rebroadcast at different time through out the week. Also we are working on a system to be able to rebroadcast our live shows. This is in the works.

We are recruiting new listeners. If you have not taken the time to listen to our little station I urge you to do so. We have a lot fun and pass along some great ideas. we only ask that you check any attitude, religion, and politics at the door.

The Artisan Challenge will be back in a few weeks. You wanna talk some fun and exposure...........more on this to come.

Some Advertising deals.........right now you can purchase 1000 impressions with a click able ad for $15.00. There are 24 of these left. You can buy as many as you like for the price. Advertiser will be responsible for the banner (240 x 240 pxl) and the scripting for the commercial. Contact advertising@blockheadradio.com for more information.

We are working on some show sponsorship spots and a coop commercial with Charlie the crazy chipmunk.
