Meet the Musicians: Trey Green

Effortlessly cool and eternally whimsical, Trey Green embodies a series of irresolvable contradictions. He likes it that way. The Boston-based, globetrotting artist is impossible to pin down in any way, shape or form. At one moment incisive, at one moment hilarious and at other moments spouting foul humor, his inexplicably has had him create an unforgettable debut self-titled CD, a work that worms itself into the mind of the listener. You may be moved, amused or even appalled, but in a world of shrug your shoulder artists, Trey Green stands alone.

Trey Green was born in Memphis, Tennessee, but he has lived all over the world. From the mountains of Aspen, Colorado to the Bahamas, from Hawaii to Bozeman, Montana, Trey´s travels have left a man comfortable in any environment, and more importantly, with an insight into humanity that most people never even ponder. People are regional, Trey points out. I´ve been to every state and over fifty countries, and everyone has a bias favoring where they´re from against other places. It´s hilarious, he says with a mischievous grin. But it does make me able to see life from a lot of different aspects, and I am able to use that in writing songs, he states. And most importantly, I get to see the awesome humor in every day life.

Trey grew up in a musical family and has been writing songs since childhood. A concert cellist in the first grade, he became a concert pianist by third grade and has since completely forgotten both instruments. But he still plays the American made Stratocaster that he saved up for and bought at the age of twelve, with which he immediately began writing songs. I never wanted to play other people´s songs, Trey says. I always wanted to write them. That´s one thing I´m serious about.

Trey has a life-long love affair with the ocean he surfs, spear-fishes, and works in ocean conservation. It was in Fiji where he discovered his own unique appeal. He remembers, I was on Tavi surfing and hanging out with a crew of surfers and the tribe. I´m sitting there with about twenty Fijian women singing this incredible harmony, they ask me to play a song, so I played My Girlfriend. People lit up three people came up to me afterwards and told me I could get on the radio with it. One guy even offered to pay to record it, and for the first time I realized that the songs I was making up in my head could actually reach other people. So I started to go for it.

Indeed, My Girlfriend, a hilarious and irrepressibly catchy tale of a sexually and chemically out-of-control girlfriend, was the breakthrough for Trey. Recording it and then sending it out to a few friends as a Christmas gift/joke, he found the song had appeal beyond what he ever imagined. I went to see a friend´s band play in New York and they asked me to get up on stage and sing My Girlfriend. So I got up and sang it and all the girls in front knew the lyrics! I had no idea the song had spread virally to hundreds of people.

In April of 2008, Trey released his self-title debut CD, a winning collection of songs that, while infused with his unique and uproarious sense of humor, also displays a natural and diverse sense of melody and arrangements. Filled with driving and propulsive rock songs, only Trey would write something as affecting as "Tavarua," a moving ode to his surf spot in Fiji, a place he calls heaven on earth, and put it on an album with the wry and hilarious My Fantastic Ass.

For Trey, the experience of recording was an illuminating one. He recounts, I had never recorded in a studio before and walked in with the songs in my head. I didn't know the musicians and just played them everything from scratch. It was the coolest experience of my life to see what we came up with. I never sang as hard before a lot more came out.

Trey shot a hilarious video for My Girlfriend, which can be seen on MySpace and YouTube, but he´s already preparing for the next chapter of the Trey Green story. I´m starting to write songs for the second album, and I´m conceiving of what the ultimate Trey Green show is all over the place, with funny songs, loud songs, sad songs, maybe even skits. I want it to be a complete experience. Whatever I do, people should know that an experience with Trey Green will always be serious fun.

Are You A Freak Like Me?

Underwhelmed

Most rock bands look to hitch themselves to whatever the hot new musical trend is. Not so with Underwhelmed. The New York based quintet plays a driving and emotionally overwhelming brand of hard rock that hearkens back to an era where bands left everything they had on the stage. On their new album, Reveal, the band displays the unity and sense of purpose that has built the band a growing national base of fans who love rock, because they live it.

Consisting of Chris Amplo on vocals, Mike Russo on bass, his brother Chris Russo on drums, Paul Boyle on guitar and Mike Armstrong on guitar, the story of Underwhelmed is one of friendship and a shared vision. Starting in 1998, when Chris auditioned for the Russo brothers, the band has dedicated themselves to their own vision of what rock can be. As lead singer Chris Amplo says, “We go for a real sense of purity in what we do. We’re not trying to reinvent rock. We’re five guys playing the music the way we think it should be played.” That way is an amalgam of stylings, containing everything from the anthemic rock Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen and U2, to the darker sonic palette of bands like the Doors and the Afghan Whigs.

After filling out their lineup with Paul Boyle and Mike Armstrong in 2003, the band set to take New York by storm. Playing legendary clubs like CBGB’s, the band paid their dues in the competitive New York club scene with an attitude that is at the heart of who the are. Mike states, “Basically, we play with the same passion whether we’re playing for 4 people or 4000. I think audiences recognize that, and it has them feel a real connection to us.”

The results have spoken for themselves. 10,000 visitors to their MySpace page each month and expanding tour base including markets in the mid-Atlantic, mid-West, South and Northeast. “We have a band that’s exciting to watch,” Amplo enthuses. Mike and Chris Russo are incredible musicians – Chris is an unbelievably exciting drummer to watch. Mike just kills it on guitar and Paul just oozes with the most unique energy that we get so much from. He’s a real creative inspiration to all of us.” What makes it even more impressive is that the band has done this all on their own, all self-managed and self-financed.

Now the band is set to take things to the next level with the release of their new album, Reveal. Produced by Tom Hazaert at his studios in Strongsville, OH, the album is a collection of songs that are far more than the sum of their parts. Written collectively by the band, the songs display the maturation of the songwriting and confidence that has come with it. As Amplo says, “We’re all more confident in ourselves and each other, and that really comes through in the songs.”

You can hear that confidence in the “Reveal,” the album’s title track. Beginning with a winsome guitar intro and Chris’s strong and supple voice, the song becomes a melodic explosion that showcases Paul and Mike’s driving and thundering guitars and the propulsive rhythm section of Mike and Chris Russo. It’s the kind of radio ready rock that is beyond trends, and never fails to move an audience.

With its irresistible hooks, “Angel” is the kind of song that leaves one breathless with the sheer skill of the songwriting and playing. Like many great songs, it was one that came together quickly. Amplo recalls, “We had the lyrics and melody in an hour and a half. It was like the music came through me and wrote itself.” And “Leave It All Behind,” a tale of love gone wrong, pulses with a raw sensuality and layer of darkness that makes it phenomenally compelling.

The band will be hitting the road soon – playing whenever they can. “If it was up to me,” says Mike with nods from the rest of the band, “I’d just pack up the van and be gone.” “We love getting out there and meeting people,” says Chris. And with an album containing the skill and depth of Reveal, combined with a work ethic that has already paid the band dividends, it seems only a matter of time until Underwhelmed ascend to a level befitting their status as a truly great melodic hard rock band.

doublethink

dou-ble-think (n.):
- Thought marked by the acceptance of gross contradictions and falsehoods, especially when used as a technique of self-indoctrination: "Doublethink... is a vast system of mental cheating" (George Orwell).

doublethink boasts an enormous rock n’ roll sound, songs that are broad and powerful, and a dynamic line-up of young and energetic players. This band does not settle for anything less than huge. Effortlessly blending stadium rock, pop, metal, and alternative music, with the sensibility of music’s greatest, doublethink is not just another act.

doublethink will be releasing their new EP Seeing Red on Valentines Day 2009. Seeing Red was recorded and produced by legendary rock producer Kevin "Caveman" Shirley (Aerosmith, Silverchair, Our Lady Peace). Recorded at The Document Room Studios in Malibu, California, overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Seeing Red finds the band capturing their live energy like no other release of theirs ever has.

doublethink has played over 200 shows from 2005-2008, including sharing the bill with Collective Soul, Boy Hits Car, Finger Eleven, Non-point, and Thornley. They have a tremendous, kinetic live performance… the crowds embrace their energy, dance and move, and enjoy their ears ringing for days.

Going Green with Mom's Cafe..and a giveaway!

Last night Mom's Cafe went green and YES, we stayed on topic! Rocker and I discussed various ways you can go green and be eco-friendly and NOT break the bank! We chatted about what being green means to us, for myself I will be as green as my pocketbook allows and I respect the earth we've been given; for Rocker, she explained she just cannot stand to see things throw away, she sees potential in everything!

We shared some fantastic links, tutorials and shops you can purchase green items from if you are sewing machine phobic.

Here are some to get you started:

Did you know the Average American throws away 68 lbs of clothing each year? That is insane!! Think of all the good that could come from that! Even if you are not a crafty person, think of the other places you can share your unwanted items! Freeuse, Freecycle, Goodwill, Salvation Army, Women's Shelters, Homeless Shelters, Schools, etc. There are places you may never realize would take donations..perhaps your local Head Start, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts could use some items? Police stations may take clothing and toys to use when dealing with rape or abuse victims. Donate your blankets to homeless shelters or hospitals for babies...who knows if your blanket could help keep one baby warm? Why throw it out?? Do good!

Parenthood also leads one to many Earth Friendly possibilities, reusing toys, sharing toys, handmade toys and clothing, cloth diapering, mama cloth and many reusable items for mom and baby abound!

Here are some awesome shops to find such items:

Here Birdy, Birdy, Birdy....

Knits that is! I have met a lovely couple, James and Birdy who are the brains, heart and soul behind Birdy's Knits, a selection of great shops where you can find excellent handmade items like knitting stitch markers, patterns, knitted items, and more! Their free pattern for a Swiffer Reusable Cloth Pad has been downloaded over 800 times! Get yours HERE!

Who ARE James and Birdy really? "Birdy is a knitter and designer. She was recently featured in Knitty (http://www.knitty.com) with her flit-n-float scarf. James is the designer and crafter of our line of Duals Use Notions for Fiber Artists." Now, if you are not a knitter you may be asking yourself just what are stitch markers? (I know I was!) James explains it quite well, "Our Dual use stitch markers are designed using leverback earrings, so they make great earrings. We have some of our knitters that say they use them as much as earrings as they do in their projects. It also comes in handy when your knitting and find you need a stitch marker but can't find one. Pop there it is, in your ear. They are also usable in crochet projects. Someone even told us they used it as a cabling needle for a small cable and they couldn't find theirs. So in reality they are more than dual use, but I just like the sound of that! We also have dual use row counters that are still a bit in development, that can also be worn as necklaces or bracelets. Also still in it's testing phase are our new Dual use stitch holders. which are also wearable as a necklace, and will be in coordinating designs with our stitch markers. As we like to say, 'They're not just jewelry for you, they're for your knitting too!'" Birdy and James launched Birdy's Knits Website about 2 years ago with just knitting patterns, then added the stitch markers one year ago.

Birdy home schools their two children while James works a full time job to take care for life's' un-fun necessities and then comes home to work on all the marketing, promoting and 'business' details of running a handmade business--something many people take for granted! As James says, "There are lots of things that go into all of that, that people don't realize. Like the emails that need to be answered about products. The website changes that need to be made. The listing of the items. The pictures that need to be taken, oh don't get me started on pictures. Then there is the promoting, if you are tring to do that on a budget, then it takes loads of time to get into forums and on chat threads talking up your products. I spend about 6-8 hours a day working on just the business, and that's on top of the 10-12 hour days at the FT job, so I could use like 6 more hours a day, 4 more for family and 2 more for sleep."

Time crunch seems to be something most handmade artisans face! It is one of the main answers I get when asking artisans what their top challenges are. Along with the time challenge, James and Birdy find themselves with the obstacle of "getting your products known." James explains, "We started our business 2 years ago, with just some of Birdy's Patterns. We then expanded to our Dual Use Stitch Markers about a year ago. We got some traffic but not a lot. We didn't know how to market online. So this year we are working on expanding our marketing for our products. We started with finally listing on Etsy this year in late January, and then we started searching our Handmade venues to sell on. So we added ArtFire, Shophandmade and MadeItMyself. For us it's all about getting our products in front of people. After reading several forums and blogs we have been discovering different ways to get your name known, and we continue to work on those. The other obstacle that we have placed on ourselves, is that we refuse to go into debt to make this work. So we are funding this business on it's own funds. I work a special event each year as a contract worker, and the money from that as well as the money from the business is what funds everything. That means we are growing slower than we might sometimes like, but at the same time we are growing."

Although it may be a slow start, there have been some great moments for James and Birdy, particularly Birdy's publication in Knitty is one of their proudest moments. James says, "It was great to see so many people discover her for the first time. We had thousands of hits on our website in a matter of days almost all new, and discovering Birdy's work for the first time!" That is indeed a fantastic achievement....no matter how many sales you get, seeing your work appreciated is an important step in the work of a handmade artisan.

There work is certainly appreciated by this mama even though I cannot knit a stitch to save my life! If you want to find MORE about Birdy and James, be sure to check all these links along with the ones mentioned above!

From The Blockhead Rod Show to Blockhead Radio

As I sit here early this morning with a long set of Hot Buttered Rum playing, I am almost overwhelmed with what has happened.

First a little history.

I think back to the humble beginnings of 'The Blockhead Rod Show'. Yep that was the name of it way back when. A friend of mine (Gena from the Creative Animal Relief show Mondays 7pm et on BHR, yep we got her and Tammy on BHR now.) knew I was a pro blogger and told me about this Internet radio platform. I tuned into one of her shows, called in, and I was hooked. The next Monday I did my first show. I was so nervous I dropped the phone during the show. You can ask Sew Happy Designs about that, she was there. I settled down after that and really enjoyed doing the shows promoting artisans and trying to help them out in any way I could. It was a good show, but kind of Steinish (yes that is an official BHR term) I knew something was missing. Then one Monday night some flaky chick called in and crashed my show......did it again the following Monday. I figured for the sake of the show I would just put her on as a co host
......welcome Witchy.

From there we grew to 14 live shows a week and maxed out what we could do on that platform. We talked about it and decided we would launch our own station. Hey I can do that no problem. ROFLOL it was fun. After looking around I went the independent route. Really wish somebody would write a book on it.......I just wanna know how we did it. Blockhead Radio is now a live streaming 24/7 Internet radio station exposing artisans to the world with a blend of music from the top indie musicians.

Where are we at now.

16 live show from artisan shows to in the garden and growing. We have several shows in the works and still looking to add more. All the shows center around from being and artisan, to family, to life. It is still a kid friendly station. Hey, we might have slipped but we can control ourselves.

Last week we officially partnered up with Artfire.com. This wasn't a spur of the minute decision and not one we did for money. I am so impressed with what John and Tony had put together for the artisan. They really do put the artisan first. Artfire has a new site launching here soon, http://handmadenews.org and there is a button that launches the player. That was awesome. Now we can reach more artisans and more buyers.

Witchy, Huck, and I have been hanging out at a new site over the past couple weeks. http://byhand.me Yes mama, I know you told me about it, but I was still in the process of figuring out which wire went where. Thankfully an artisan in the Artfire chatterbox told Witchy about it and we were hooked. Infivison and Soapdeli have put together an outstanding site for artisans. So Blockheads being Blockheads we went on air telling everybody about this site. That's what we do. Over the weekend they added a really cool banner link to Blockhead Radio on their site. Thanks to both of you.

I got up this morning to 3 emails that really brought it home for me. Sometimes I get so busy coding, getting shows together, and promoting I forget about the impact we are having.

The first was from Soapdeli.

"Take a look at http://byhand.me and tell me if you see anything different." I went to the site with my first cup of coffee in hand. Right there on top is a button (really cool looking I have to add) to launch the player. That almost put me on the floor. I had to ask myself.......'are we really that good?'

The second email was from an artisan.

"I am a new listener to Blockhead Radio and haven't ventured into chat yet. I haven't made a sale yet but have now got inspiration again." All I could say was come on into chat, Witchy is the only one who bites and I've got all her shot records and they are up to date.

The third one was from a listener and I get quite a few that go along the same lines every week.

"Dude your station rocks. I heard about it in a forum and tuned in one morning. You and witchy had me laughing so hard that I had tears rolling out of my eyes. I love the music. I can't believe these bands are indie. I never knew about this handmade thing and started checking out some of the links. It is so cool. Thanks for the music and rock on." Dude, got my bic out held high during most of the songs too. Glad you love the music....we got more indie musicians getting ready to join us.

So are we really that good? I don't know, but we sure have fun doing it. We put something together here that hasn't been done before. Every day I work at improving the stations quality and making it easier for people to listen in. As Mike Burnes said, "You've started a revolution in the radio and music industry". Oops. The majority of internet stations work under a commercial site. Not us. Hey we may have hiccups every now and then but that's half the fun...not really,
it drives me nuts.

The best thing to have come from this venture are all the new friends I have made.

I want to thank our listeners, stalkers, and friends. We do this for you. (and beer money) Really, it has been through your support that BHR has become what it is.

Have a Great Day and ROCK ON DUDE,
Blockhead

Keeping it Clean with Matersum

The concept of Reusable Feminine Products, also known as Mama Cloth, can be quite intimidating and perhaps not what you'd consider something to blog about. Yet there is great talent involved in quality mama cloth and I have found it in Matersum's Mama Cloths! "Why toss when you can wash" is the mantra behind Matersum and creator Jenn.

You might be asking yourself WHAT in the world IS mama cloth? Well long story short, mama cloth is reusable sanitary pads. Yes, you read that right. Now, I admit, that when I first heard of this a year ago, when I began my personal journey into cloth diapering, I was not keen on the idea. But it has slowly grown on me! After all, I'm using cloth on the babies bum...why not use cloth for me? There is so much waste in this world, why not do a little something to eliminate it?

There are many excellent shops to purchase mama cloth from, but we are focusing on matersum.artfire.com today! Her prints are GORGEOUS and her method of constructing the pads is slightly different than most. As a seamstress and firm believer in cloth diapers/cloth whenever possible, I appreciate the craftsmanship in her pads.

Her work is best described by Jenn on her Artfire shop, "Matersum is exclusively selling fold-up pads. These are AIO (all-in-one) fold-up cloth menstrual pads designed by yours truly. They bring the best of both worlds: the convenience of an all-in-one pad (no messing with inserts that can be lost!) with the quick-drying capabilities of a traditional folding pad. It's quick-drying, eco-friendly, and comfortable to boot! It's based on a pretty standard concept of fold-up pad but I've modified the outer shape to curve to your panties, and offer plenty of coverage without being bulky. I've attached the folded core to the main pad on the side of the fold, rather than on an end, I find this helps to keep the shape of the fold better.

I use a turned and top-stitched sewing method (instead of serging) for the top pad. This is for comfort, durability, and aesthetics. It is composed of a wonderfully cotton print and backed in CANADIAN-made 16oz bamboo fleece (70% bamboo, 30% organic cotton). The absorbent core is a 2 layer folded pad (making 4 layers) made from the same incredibly soft organic bamboo fleece, zigzag stitched and reinforced in a coordinating thread. (Please note the pretty freehand sewn "m" I decorate each core with! Just lovely!!)

You can wear the pad either side up as there is no waterproofing, but it was designed to have the print on top. The pad is surprisingly trim and incredibly absorbent. Remember that bamboo is 3 times as absorbent as cotton! I would consider this to be a heavy-flow pad, but everyone is different, so be sure to check your pad regularly."

That may have gone a little "stein" on you non-sewing fanatics, but believe me when I say they are very well made! What is most fantastic about Jenn is she is a self-taught seamstress who makes her mama cloth with love. She does not mass produce any of her wares, each pad is lovingly made one at a time from start-to-finish. There's no production-line. Anyone who loves handmade knows this is an important aspect of a well run handmade business!

How did Jenn get started with Matersum? She says, "I began making cloth pads (and cloth diapers, originally) as an extension of my green pledge which was motivated not by wanting to save the planet but by wanting to keep my home environment safe for my (then newborn) child. But since becoming entrenched in the cloth pad world, it's now the pads, themselves, that are are making me greener. Cloth pads and diapers opened my eyes to better ways of doing things and that is what I am most proud of."

While Jenn runs a lovely set of shops and a great blog , she is not without obstacles. one of the biggest obstacles she faces is "people's preconceived ideas about women and the menstrual cycle. Men are generally taught to be disgusted by it and women are taught to be ashamed of it. It's normal; it's natural; it's real; and it has to be acknowledged so we can just move on,"says Jenn.

And what better way to fully accept it than to use these beautiful pads? No, a woman's cycle is by no means entertaining, fun or luxurious, but perhaps one can feel a little more like the princesses that we are by using these lovely pads? Soft, eco-friendly and beautiful, what else do you need? (Besides a beach, daiquiri and a two hour nap....oh wait, that's just me.)

Another thing I appreciate about Jenn and her shop is her REALNESS! (I've decided that's a word, if it isn't.) She admits to perhaps not being the most fantastically organized business woman, because her love of sewing and eco-friendly handmade trumps her desire to do boring secretarial type things--something we can all likely sympathize with! Who wants spreadsheets when there is art to be made?

Jenn is real, her work is amazing and her belief in what she does and WHY she does it is something we should all look up to!

She clearly draws her inspiration from nature as evidenced by her fabric choices, and I think she may have a big of a fabric obsession like yours truly! But any seamstress will tell you high quality products start with high quality fabrics, and Jenn does a great job providing those.

Jenn doesn't currently belong to any teams, but does Twitter at http://twitter.com/matersum/
So be sure to check her out, send her a twitter and ask her about mama cloth! She'll gladly help you navigate your way if you need some guidance!!

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to do some window shopping......

A Froggy Rocker, Mama and Big Announcement...

What? You weren't there this past Wednesday at 9 pm to hear me, Mama Possum and Rocker gab about blogs and our overall awesomeness? WELL! You will be fined two points from the biggest Stalker contest! Okay, I suppose we'll forgive you. Just remember the golden rule...there is to be NO discussing of "Lost" with me until I have seen it!

IF you missed our little show, you missed a very froggy Rockerchic and I chat about blogs and how to use them for your business. Here are a few key points:

Use widgets and tools to your benefit! Such as:
www.entrecard.com
www.feedburner.com
www.tehnorati.com
Those are just the tip of the iceberg, there are many more.

Also discussed was the cardinal sin of blogging, (particularly if you use Entrecard), NO AUTO MUSIC!! We cannot emphasize that enough! HUGE turn off for your readers, and a big no-no if you use Entrecard.

Do remember WHY you blog, if you blog personal stories, remember that if you are using that blog for business, EVERY reader is a potential customer and what you blog about can either hurt or help you. Try to avoid personal rants, complaining and NEVER EVER bad mouth another artisan. That's just bad mojo. :)

And do not miss next week's Mom's Cafe! I have a prior committment, but the lovely Witchy will be stepping in for me for more nonesense, mom/artisan info and fun!!

Have a great day!!

Soap that's out of this world....

Can be found lovingly made by the talented Celyn from CosmicCleanBody. Not only does Celyn make some gorgeous soap, candles, and various other beautiful creations, she also does amazing handmade glass jewelry/art. Her gorgeous glass art can be found at GazedUponGlass

But who really are the warm bodies behind such fantastic creations?
Celyn and her husband brew up the soapy goodness over in CosmicCleanBody. Her husband is the mathematician and brains of the operation, and Celyn is the creativity and loving touch! Their love of soap co-exists nicely with their secret desire to be mad scientists...after all, handmade, cold process soap is really all about science, with a good nose and creative brains thrown in!

You'll note an out of this world theme over at CosmicCleanBody...space, the final handmade frontier! Most of the creations have an outer worldly theme! Such creations include Galactic Bubbly - Champagne scented Soap, Martian Melon - Watermelon scented Soap and of course the ever popular Free the Pink Alien Monster Soap! Blockhead Radio was assured no aliens are harmed in the making of any soaps!

But soaps are not enough for Celyn! She also makes glass soap dishes, bath puffs, body/linen sprays, candles, sachets and incense holders!! When does she sleep you might wonder?

I'm curious of her sleeping habits also, because not ONLY does she make all this loveliness, but she ALSO does fused glass art and jewelry!! See, this is where most people would take a nap in their busy days, but not Celyn!! She is a glass artist who uses copper foil, leading, mosaic, fusing and torch work to create her glass creations. Celyn says, "Both of my grandmothers were very artistic and I grew up drawing and painting with them. Throughout my school years I won numerous awards for drawing and painting. But when I discovered glass I knew I had found my medium."

But Celyn knows that it is important to draw the line between work and family. As she says, "Time is my biggest obstacle. I have 4 children. One is grown and out on his own, another is a teenager in high school and then two young toddlers. I know how quickly they grow, and I try to spend as much time as I can with them because it's over before you know it. There just isn't enough time in the day"

Family is obviously important to Celyn, because, as previously mentioned, her husband works closely with her. He even offered to send her to photography lessons because she feels that is one area she could improve on. Personally, I think her shots are GORGEOUS, but she is right, everyone could improve their photography just a little!! As Celyn put it, "Since my main selling venue is online, pictures tell the story!"

Her work is not without challenges. Celyn faces what many handmade artisans face, dealing with our innate urge to provide only perfect items for our customers! When asked what her biggest challenge was, Celyn replied, "Myself... Many of my customers want custom creations. I struggle with this because everything I do I want to be perfect and the very best it can be and sometimes I doubt myself. So being my own biggest critic is my biggest challenge." This is an all to familiar theme and feeling among handmade artisans. Despite the fact that the slight variations in handmade items are one of the things that makes them appealing, we all struggle with the question of, is my work good enough?

There is no doubt in my mind, Celyn's work IS indeed good enough--MORE Than good enough! Because not only does she provide excellent work, but she is most proud (and should be!) of her excellent customer service! Celyn says, "I know what I want/expect from someone I purchase from and I try to take that to the next level. I try to ship all orders within 24 hours (with the exception of custom orders) and I make them enjoyable to open, each one a gift to whoever is opening it."

It is indeed this attitude that helps Celyn's work stand out. Her art of soap and fused glass is in two genres that indeed are full of fantastic artisans. Yet her work stands out and is frequently featured in treasuries, blogs, and more. The tight knit handmade community also helps in this aspect! One might think that selling on the Internet would result in anonymity and a 'closed in' feeling...but that is one unique thing about the handmade community. Due to various teams, groups, forums, and venues (and awesome places like Blockhead Radio!) we can all join together and share our work, ideas, thoughts and inspirations!

Celyn is currently working with several artisans, including Cozy Cabin Creations
by turning Cozy's fabric scraps into lovely scented sachets!! She also has several other collaborations in the works and is proud of her Etsy Street Teams, Cafemom Etsy Moms (CEM) and Michigan Street Team (MICE)..

Of COURSE Celyn blogs and you can read her soapy, shiny goodness at http://gazeduponglass.blogspot.com/
You can also find her on Myspace at: http://www.myspace.com/gazeduponglass

Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/celyn4

So be sure to check out BOTH of Celyn's shops if you do nothing else today!!

And because I can, I am leaving you with two of her most awesome pieces of work! :)

Featured Artisan...BOLO Designs

Do you want to play Dominoes? No? Well, Angel from BOLOdesigns may take you up on that offer if you let her keep the Dominoes after the game! Angel makes beautiful pendants out of Dominoes for her Etsy shop and local sales. Angel allowed Blockhead Radio to pick her brain a little and we happily share what we learned.

Angel doesn't just stop at Domino pendants, she also works with photography, painting, paper-maiche, and re-junking. It is easy to imagine she would try any art if given the time and opportunity! Time is definitely something Angel thinks about, because when asked how she thought she could improve her craft, she replied, "I would love to give it [her craft] more of my time. I work 90 miles from home so I only actually get to work on it about 8 hours a week!"

Due to time constraints, she does not blog or work on any other venues at the moment, but we think those tasks will be on her to-do list soon! She's been crafting in one form or another "forever", so we see big things in her future! Angel has only been on Etsy a short time, mostly selling in her latest hometown, Slidell, LA (coincidentally, the hometown of BHR's very own Amy the Awesome Possum!) Slidell is 30 miles north of New Orleans, which by the way, Angel properly pronounces "New Or-lens", although she will on occasion say "Naw'lins"! New Orleans has a plethora of artistic inspirations and Angel says she draws her inspirations from "EVERYTHING! Books, magazines, nature, TV....even a crumpled up piece of newspaper is all I need to get my mind working." Angel's favorite piece is her "golden tree series." You really must check that series out, it is gorgeous.

One thing that is alluring about the pendants Angel creates is that they are jewelry you can wear every day (even to the beach!), but due to their beauty, you can happily show them off as a piece of art! Pendant art on a budget--exactly what people need these days!

Angel is "originally from Houston, Tx but now lives outside New Orleans. She has interior design degree but has always enjoyed the building-planning-creating part more than the actual shopping-decorating part. She is always in constant motion and usually has 10 projects going on at one time! She always tries to come up with a new way to use a material. After hurricane Katrina, she decided to make her art out of salvaged materials. Most recently she began using scraps of plywood left over from the neighbors windows to make canvases."

We all know handmade artists love to buy handmade and if money were no object, Angel would love "a kiln and a huge printer for my photography. And I'm in love with big wing backed chairs. I love them and I don't know why. I don't think I've actually ever sat in one. But I think they are beautiful! I've seen a few on Magazine St., in the city [New Orleans], that I want-want-want!!!! And there is a particular one on Etsy that I've fallen in love with... That would be my big handmade personal purchase, definitely!"

BOLOdesigns is definitely a site to keep your eye on, and of course, should you enjoy any of her work, you can pick up a piece just for yourself! Blockhead Radio invites you to peruse her shop and maybe just drop her a comment, give her a heart or encouraging word!

BOLOdesigns, dominoes anyone?

Introducting, Garsticksandstring

"Man enough to knit...strong enough to purl" is the logo for GARsticksandstring.etsy.com. Gar, as he is referred to, is, are you ready....a 14 year old young man who knits and sells his awesome handmade items online.

But let's not focus on his age. Yes, it is unique to find a teenage boy knitting, let alone using the word "purl"..(which, by the way, caused this blog author to bust out the dictionary.) Apparently, purl means, "An inversion of stitches in knitting, which gives to the work a ribbed or waved appearance." And Gar can do it well! His amazing creations include lambs, hedgehogs (the favorite of a few BHR staff), scarves, hats, baskets and more!

Gar is homeschooled and attributes his love of knitting to several people, including Ms. Kelda, a teacher who helped get him started with knitting. He also owes much to his mom, who Gar says, "brings me through the rough and applauds through the success"...and she buys the supplies of course! Gar lives with his parents, and slightly older sister (just 13 months!) in Louisiana. Gar is ALWAYS having a wool craving, he says, and if he is unable to knit for a few days, feels bad!

When asked if he had a wishlist of purchases, he replied that he would like "patches and a bumper sticker for the business",and earrings for sister and, of course, more wool. Besides his shop on Etsy, Gar also has a shop on Ravelry, www.garstickandstring.ravelry.com.

It is refreshing to see a young man with goals..and Gar has goals indeed! If he had no time or money restraints he'd love to create cable mittens, Easter eggs, baskets, and pottery. He loves to create custom orders, and would probably knit 24 hours in the day if he could!

Gar is also "member/moderator/(co)creator of a group called Minor Effect! Minor Effect is a group for teens (ages 13-19) on Etsy to get together and share ideas. There are 3 other leaders helping out: CrochetRUs (member/moderator/(co)creator), peasantsoup (admin/adult supervisor), and WorksInProgress (admin/adult supervisor)!!" Although they are not an acutal street team, they provide each other with support, encouragement, and share ideas and life has a young handmade artisan on their blog.

One of the things that makes this shop and artist unique is that some of the items are felted, which Gar explains, "for those of you who don't know what that {felted} means I knit my projects with 100% wool and then I agitate them in BOILING hot water for about an hour and the fibers in the wool come together so my projects come out felted!" Now THAT is handmade!

We anticipate many great things for Gar, and a happy life full of wool, sales, and overall handmade awesomeness!

Be sure to check out Gar's shop as he is gearing up for Spring and Easter!

Sabrina Shaheen

SABRINA SHAHEEN: Love Is...Sabrina’s CD, Love Is... is a vocally driven pop CD with various musical genres coming together to create one sound that is uniquely hers. With an imaginative contrast of vocal styling and dynamic arrangements, Sabrina is destined to shed new light on contemporary music.

For years, Sabrina Shaheen has touched listeners with the sound of her voice and her dedication to uplifting people with her music. Whether singing in the theater, the symphony, in film or in concert, Sabrina is one of those rare performers whose singing conveys both passionate beauty and depth. Her new album, Love Is... is a powerful expression of her musical vision, one that has been a lifetime in the making.

Born and raised in Michigan, Sabrina has been immersed in music and the arts for as long as she can remember. Starting on her family’s piano at the age of four, at seven, she began formal piano lessons. At the same time, she was studying ballet (from the age of three through college) and would eventually become a member of the Tri-City Ballet Company while in high school. (Sabrina has studied a variety of dance, including ballet, tap, flamenco, modern and jazz.)

Throughout the challenges of her life, music has been, in Sabrina’s words, “a true, loyal friend – the thing that’s never let me down.” Loving various genres of music – hard rock, jazz, pop, classical and dance, Sabrina channeled her love into an intensive program of music study, all with the goal of becoming a performer.

A performer is what Sabrina has become, playing in over ten musical, dance and theatrical roles for the University of Michigan and regional theaters with lead roles in Kismet, A Chorus Line and Peter Pan, among others. She has sung at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Hall in Detroit and has performed live at Detroit’s legendary Cobo Hall. She’s been a mainstay in the Detroit music circuit, keeping up a relentless schedule of performing her originals and standards at various clubs, restaurants and parties. Her versatility has also earned her voice-over work and even won her the lead role in the independent film “Rage Of Justice.” And in perhaps her most unusual gig, she sang at a private party for Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Amidst her dizzying schedule and accomplishments, over the last few years, Sabrina worked on what she calls, “my labor of love,” her new album, Love Is… Produced by Brian Drago and Sabrina herself, the album is a departure from Sabrina’s history of singing jazz. Instead, Love Is… emphasizes Sabrina’s love of dance and ethereal pop, simultaneously recalling Madonna and Enya. Sabrina says, “The more self-confident I’ve become, the more I wanted to get into various pop styles; some with a dance beat, some with a middle eastern sound. To me, it all blends together into my own style.”

Standout tracks include the sultry opening song, “Show Me,” and the album’s title track, “Love Is…” an expression of Sabrina’s vision of what love makes possible for humanity. She expands, “I love the song because it captures what I believe humans can strive for – a kinder level of living for humanity.” “Ecstasy” oozes with sensuality, as Sabrina’s voice weaves a tale of hypnotic seduction that’s utterly irresistible. And the album’s first single, “In My Life,” is the album’s statement of purpose – to follow a dream no matter who or what is in the way.

After years of working to be the best singer, writer and performer she can be, and in a career filled with impacting all whom she encounters, Sabrina Shaheen has reached a peak with Love Is… Her intention to reach people through her music remains as unshakable as ever. She declares, “I want my music to be heard by people all over the world – I’ve been through so much, and I want to share it with everyone.” Given Sabrina’s dedication to her craft and her relentless pursuit of her dream, it seems almost inevitable that her wish will come true.

You can find Sabrina online at sabrinashaheen.com or purchase her CD here.
